What if instead of pausing the virtual machine, you clicked on the "save machine state", then deleted the page file within the mounted VHD. Then went back into the machine. Would that make the effect of the page file suddenly being deleted?

Desktop.ini does not impact file associations or how files are processed by the related applications. But it seems to tailor folder views appropriately for the contained filetypes, including which properties appear in detailed view like date taken for image files.
It may also serve to enable apps to quickly find collections of files they might be appropriate to.
An app that can update all desktop.ini files in folders based on the types of files found there might be useful…

Summary it’s the code for stuff your running that’s why you can’t delete system32 because of desktop.ini
what happens if you rename desktop.ini to some corrupt file like mp6 and restart? windows should not recognise it and cannot boot right?
